Safety Commissioner Gerald Nicely announced yesterday details regarding Bredesen's presentation of reform to take place at the Highway Patrol. He noted that one recommendation from the investigation to ban political contributions from officers will not take place. Does this suprise you? The people receiving those contributions are the ones making the decisions regarding this issue. Of course they are not going to ban money from coming in! I can understand a free speech argument, but I think the department needs to steer clear of anything political. The point of reform is to have the THP move away from political favoritism; continuing this tradition of contributions certainly will not help anything. (story here)
