Top 10 Photos of 2005: #7

OCTOBER 13

As mentioned before, the year 2005 will certainly be remembered for the horrible hurricane season that wrecked the Gulf coast. The trip that students and faculty of Carson-Newman took to help the people of the region was certainly a huge encouragement. It was an encouragement for both the people that we assisted and a huge encouragement for the relief workers. I think that I can speak for most when I say that it helped us realize the truly important things in life. The waves and winds of Hurricane Katrina can sweep away our houses, our clothes, and our cars. The hurricane, however, cannot destroy determination or love. The people that we encountered in Biloxi and Gulfport had both. They had a strong determination to move on and rebuild; they also had a great love for their family, friends, and relief workers. We certainly walked away from each house with a special feeling in our hearts; we were so blessed by those people and the love that remained in their hearts. This picture was taken in Biloxi on the first day of the mission trip, and this was our first encounter with the true extent of damage that occured. I was so encouraged to see the many American flags still waving proudly throughout the town. This picture reminds me, despite the tremendous damage, the people of the Gulf will rise again. They will be proud once again much like this flag waved proudly in front of this house.
