Tech Quickies

Looks like the US might have adverted a WWIII of the Internet. They have made a deal with the world (?) so that the country can keep "control" over the information superhighway. An international forum will now be created; this body will comprise of representatives from many nations and will advise the US on Internet issues. This body, however, will have no authority and will over make recommendations. For me, I'm just glad that we did not have to give up the Internet backbone to the UN; Lord knows that they don't need it! (story here)

Sony has now recalled those controversial CDs that installed hidden software on a user's computer. Evidently, these discs were extremely flawed (imagine that) and made people's computers at risk to hackers and viruses. Microsoft had also said (before the recall) that they would release a Window's update that would remove the hidden software automatically. (story here)

Google releases a new service today to add to their virtual empire. The service is called Google Base; I'm not really clear on what it is all about. Some say that the system might evolve as a rival to ebay. It certainly looks interesting, though. Any Joe with a Google account can add about any type of information and have it viewable by others. (check it out here)
