Returning to Former Glory

Finally, one of my life's dreams can be accomplished (well, at least within the next few years). Mayor Bill Haslam, of Knoxville, announced this week that the city has selected developers Kinsey Probasco Hays & Associates to redevelop the city-owned structures of the World's Fair Park in downtown. One of the proposals of this developer that the city found interesting adressed the city's world-famous landmark, the Sunsphere. I have always wanted to be able to go to the top of the structure and view the vast city of Knoxville from the top of the 1982 World's Fair relic. When I had the chance to do it in 2003 during the Key Club convention, the tower was no longer open to the public. It just stood tall above the city skyline as an empty reminder of former glory. Many people may remember this great structure in a Simpsons episode where Bart and his friends decide to make a visit to Knoxville World's Fair. When they arrive, all they find is an empty fairgrounds and a wig shop in the much aged Sunsphere. Before they leave, though, they toss a rock at the structure and knock it down (such a scary thought to people of East Tennessee). Well, the city has decided to spend one million dollars on the relic, re-open the observation deck, re-open the once-famous revolving restaurant, and build a newspaper office inside. I must say that I am so excited! My dream can finally be fulfilled! I will be first in line to get that great view from Knoxville's magnificent structure. If you would like to email Mayor Haslam and
thank him for re-opening the Sunsphere, click here.
