Graduation 08

Sorry for the lack of posting recently. I have been busy graduating from college. It is finally done; I am a Carson-Newman alumnus. So weird to even think about that. Graduation was such a great, yet surreal, experience. It was perfect. The weather, the music, the speaker, and the overall feeling were all perfect. All of the graduates and the crowd were close together so it all felt very intimate. I really enjoyed walking into the stadium between CN's professors; it was a nice way to say goodbye.

Hallerin Hill gave an excellent speech called "The Love Boat." He encouraged us to love our job, love ourselves, love our neighbor, and love God above all. I loved it when Hallerin said love is what makes us hold our poots on the first date; Dr. Arrington, our provost, dropped his jaw to the ground in laughter. Both President Joe Bill Sloan and Dr. Arrington confirmed that this was the best commencement speech Carson-Newman has ever had.

Everyone then walked across the stage to receive their diploma cover with a letter inside saying that diplomas would be mailed in a few weeks. I'm glad that they didn't stop me from walking across. I was afraid they were going to stop me since I had orange and blue stripped rugby socks underneath my gown. As I shook hands with Joe Bill, he told me, "I like those socks of yours." I was so happy.

As Joe Bill was making his "charge" to graduates, we all felt the rain dropplets hitting us. I think Arrington saw lightning behind the stadium because he suddenly jumped up and told Joe Bill to cut it short. He then stopped, we sang the Alma Mater, and had the recessional. We threw our mortarboards in the air, and I shot up the silly string. Everyone then hurried out of the stadium in the gym where the reception was being held.

No to the Expo!

My friends and I were afraid that graduation would be held at the Smoky Mountain Expo Center aka cow barn due to the threat of rain. Well, what else should we do but protest in the provost's office? I'm happy to report that our efforts were successful, and we are having graduation at Carson-Newman!

A Day Full of Conclusions

Today was certainly an exciting yet sad day. I started out bright and early at 9am. Watched a little Golden Girls...such a great way to start the day. I then went into work and did a few little things. I then dashed all over campus doing various administrative things; it was nice to finally get some things done.

I then headed out to the house of the International Student Activities Director; we had a little going-away lunch for all the student workers and staff of the CGE; every student worker is leaving on Friday except one. It was such a beautiful, American-dream house sitting right along the lake. We had a great lunch and some great times; it is so sad to be leaving after working there for four years.

I then came back and went apartment shopping with my roommate. It was fun, but it was weird at the same time. We shouldn't be shopping for places to live; it is way too soon. It at least feels that way.

After spending many hours surveying Morristown, we finally made it back to Jeff City just in time for the luau. Our friends got together for one last big get together; how else better to do that than to have a luau? It is was so much fun. We played the limbo, had a potato sack relay, played pass the coconut, and a little game we like to call Gerhart (sp?). It was such a great way to end the year.

Well, here we go. Friday is the big day. At 6:30 pm, I will be an alumni of Carson-Newman College.

The End is Nigh

Well, I'm done. All finals, papers, homework are all done. Never again will I have another test at Carson-Newman. It is hard to believe that this time has finally come, and I'm not sure if I want it to be here or not.

Popetastic Wedding Shower

Went to a wedding shower yesterday to celebrate the marriage of some friends I've had since my freshman year. We had some great times, and we reminisced over the past four years. Some sweet times.

What wedding shower is complete without tissue brides?

I think the groom changed his mind.

Someone got a little carried away when it came time to "undress" the brides.

When the pope showed up, they just decided to go ahead and get married.

Last Day of Classes

Well, today is my last day of classes for my undergrad career. I start this day with a mix of emotions. I'm a little sad that I am leaving what has basically been my home for the past four years; many great memories were made here along with my friends. It is difficult to leave that. On the other side, I'm sort of excited about the future and what it holds. Next year will certainly be an adventure, and I'm not really sure what I should expect. In whatever I go, I just hope that the next few years are as great as the past four.

Earth Day at CN

The CN Art Department recognized Earth Day by creating a life-sized graph of increasing levels of CO2 emmissions over the years along with the increase in population; better yet, it was all made out of string and recycled aluminum cans. I think Al would be proud.

The cafeteria recognized it by offering no trays. Did I mention how retarded this was? We pay Aramark good money (much more than it's worth) to provide basic services - such as a tray. Although I didn't eat in the cafe, I don't think it was appropriate to take away the trays. They should have at least given patrons the option to not use a tray. Being environmentally savvy is a good marketing tool until you force consumers to do the same. Then you create angry customers.

CNC Aramark's idea of saving the environment - go tray less.

Oh, Aramark!
