Bush's Immigration Plan

Seems people that viewed the President's speech on immigration reform last night liked what they saw; 67 percent of people approved of the speech (story here). This is certainly great for a president that is suffering horrible approval ratings (which some people debate the reliability of pollsters). I really don't know where I stand on the issue. This is very complicated and is an issue that sort of came to the fore-front very quickly for no apparent reason. I do agree with Bush that the mass deportation of the millions of immigrants in the US certainly does not make any economic or moral sense. Like it or not, our economy needs these immigrants; you could expect a great drop in GDP if immigrants left America. You can say that they take jobs away from Americans, but you have to realize the type of jobs that they take. Do you see any Americans rushing to take those positions? I don't. I also think we must end the "catch-and-release" program; that just doesn't make any sense at all. I just hope that this recent immigration hoopla wasn't started to help Republicans in the mid-term elections. This is certainly an issue that does not need to be made political; we need real reform and not just and a sing-and-dance show to impress voters. It is funny, though, how this issue has suddenly risen around the start of the campaign season. The President and the Republican-controlled Congress also need something to help their approval numbers; it does seem, though, that the President will have a lot of trouble selling his plan to member of his own party.
