Former State Represenative Chris Newton received his sentence today resulting from the Tennessee Waltz sting of 2005. He will serve one year and one day in prison, will be fined $10,000, will have two years of supervised release, and will have to serve 200 hours of community service. Finally some action and justice results from the corruption that erodes our state capitol! Newton had this to say after his sentence:
"I am so disappointed I brought shame and disgrace to the people I represented. I apologize to them, to this court and to the people of Tennessee for the sorrow and … shame and the breach of public trust. There is no excuse."
He also told said that he hoped that his downfall would serve as the stop of the "corruptive influence of money" among politicans. I really doubt that will ever happen! (story here)
