Heart-Shaped Vegetables

Lets break out the broccoli and celery for Johnny's birthday! That sounds like fun, doesn't it? According to today's Tennessean, some school districts are considering the ban of sweet treats at special parties in the classroom in an effort to deter bad nutrition among children. This makes me somewhat upset; this doesn't really seem like a great idea. I can understand removing fatty foods from the breakfast and lunch menus, but this ban from holiday and birthday parties just goes too far! I remember those great parties that we used to have in elementary schools; soon enough kindergarteners will be required to read poetry and have discussions about diversity for holiday celebrations. I think having sweets at parties (in combination with a reduction of these foods at lunch) reinforces the idea that these types of foods should only be consumed for special occasions and not all the time. I do not believe that banning these foods entirely from schools will do much good. I don't know about you; but when I was told that I was not allowed to have something, I wanted it even more. Don't you think that these students will think like this also? If they are not allowed to have these foods at school, they will find ways to get it. Anyway, what kind of party can you have at school without those sprinkle-covered cupcakes? Certainly not a cool one. (story here)
