Top 10 of 2005: #9

OCTOBER 15

The year 2005 will certainly be remembered for its terrible hurricane season, which included the disastrous Hurricane Katrina. Cities all along the Gulf was flooded, many people lost their lives, and many buildings and homes were destroyed. Soon after the Hurricane had hit, Carson-Newman mobilized to help the people of the Gulf. We organized a team of students and faculty to travel to the area during Fall Break to help with disaster relief. I went along and was a part of Team #4. When we arrived, we could not believe the tremendous damage of the towns of Biloxi and Gulfport. We all knew that the many pictures taken could never fully show the true destruction of Hurricane Katrina. This picture was taken in Gulfport, Mississippi, along the beach. When we came upon the building, we were spell bounded by the damage. The bottom floor of the church was totally wiped out, but the structure was still intact and holding strong. I took this as symbol of hope for the people of the Gulf. The people might have been damaged and swept by the storm, but their character and determination will stay intact to help them rebuild.
