It is amazing how successful the Million Dollar Homepage has been. It was such a simple idea that has grown tremendously. The idea is that there is a blank website with one million pixels, and each pixel is sold for one dollar. The person that buys each block is then able to use that space however they want. Most of the pixels have been bought by commercial websites so the huge block looks like someone threw up spam on the page. The reason for the Million Dollar Homepage was so that the creator could pay his way through university. With only 1000 pixels left that is being auctioned on ebay, he will certainly reach that goal before long. (at time of posting, the auction had reached $21,600)
