Canada & Conservative?

How often do you see those two words together? Well, they now are. Yesterday, voters in Canada elected a conservative government ending 13 years of liberal rule. Who would have imagined a few years ago that conservatives would actually be celebrating the night of an election? It sounds crazy to me! I have a feeling, though, that most Canadians wanted any government different than the liberal one because of recent scandals that have rocked Ottawa. The conservatives took advantage of that situation, and it was probably a major stepping stone to their victory. I say that President Bush was the first in line to congratulate Stephen Harper (the new government leader) considering that Harper said that he would improve relations with Washington and reconsider Canada's stance on US policies. Yes, that is true. You would have to admit, though, that the liberal and conservative movements (however different from American politics) are very much different in themselves, even in Canada. Even if the Canadian conservatives are more socialist than the American counterparts, this indeed was a shift in politics for the country. I am not saying (now or in my post) that conservatives in Canada are similar to the ones in America; I have no way of knowing that.
