Official Word from the Trustees

I don't have time to address my thoughts right now, but here is the official email sent out to faculty and staff regarding the meeting of the Carson-Newman trustees over the past two days. I just have to say this: I have many questions.

Dear Faculty and Staff of Carson-Newman:

Over the last two weeks, your Board of Trustees has been very engaged in addressing the issues raised by the no-confidence vote of October 5, 2006. On Thursday and Friday, the full Board met on campus and carefully considered, deliberated, and discussed the resolutions and our appropriate response. We take this matter very seriously. We are beginning, immediately, to implement initiatives which will aid us in working together to thoroughly explore the issues so that we may arrive at good, productive decisions and actions.

Last evening, the Board unanimously adopted a resolution which calls for constructive engagement of all Carson-Newman constituencies. We are proceeding with affirmation of our students, faculty, administration and alumni and a commitment to doing what is right and best for our great institution.

As we enter into the process, I have three requests of you. First, I ask that you be patient. As I have said, these are serious matters which deserve the kind of deliberative and careful understanding that can only be a product of time. We are proceeding with a sense of urgency, yet at a pace which will provide the kind of end result which we all desire. Second, I ask that you participate in this resolution. We cannot get there without you. We are developing mechanisms by which you will be heard, and by which the collective voice of the college family will help us shape the outcome. Finally, we covet your prayer. We humbly recognize God’s hand on these sacred hills, and seek his wisdom, guidance, and courage.

As I close, let me remind you that the task before us is not an easy one. We have significant challenges, and addressing some of the issues before us will be challenging, as well. Please know that the board is united, with singleness of purpose and focus on the work to be done.

Thank you, and may God bless you and Carson-Newman,

C. T. Cozart, Jr.
Chair, Carson-Newman College Board of Trustees

  1. My question is why they haven't taken students into consideration? Are we just the little ducklings that don't know any better? Momma and Poppa Administration have to push us along until we can swim? You would think that Students would be the second asked, after faculty and staff.
