According to the Tennessean, this has been a good session in Nashville for businesses across the state. A few of the things that happened (or didn't happen): the increase of the minimum wage to $6.15 failed, a law that would require big companies to spend 10% of payrolls on health-care benefits failed, local governments can no longer put a property tax on business software, a new health-care program was approved, and plenty of tax breaks for businesses were approved. Tennessee (and Nashville in particular) has been recently ranked by some magazines a good place to do business; I guess this is why. I want to take this moment to sound off on the minimum wage issue. An increase from $5.15 is definitely needed; this low amount can no cover the many expenses that people face. It certainly has not kept up with rising inflation. I do not, however, support a raise just state-wide. We need an increase in the rest of the US because (1) inflation affects the whole nation and (2) Tennessee should not loose their competitive advantage. We certainly, though, need an increase of the minimum wage throughout all of the US. (story here)
