The state is now considering the idea to make business software subject to property tax (story here). I can understand some taxes, but this is certainly absurd! How can you honestly consider software tangible property that should be taxed? Computers and hardware are already taxed; why should we now tax what we put in those devices? This is like saying that we should pay property tax because we put a TV in our house on the land that we already pay property taxes on. Talk about a lack of incentive to make business operations more efficient and streamlined! If this goes through, mom and pop stores down the street would have to pay more in an already struggling environment to improve their operations. Tennessee's economy certainly does not need this tax; we need to keep the businesses that have made this state strong, and this "property" tax certainly does not help businesses and their efforts to improve.
