The Trees are Coming Down

This is certainly sad news coming from Johnson City. The hotly debated beech trees located at the corner of Market Street and State of Franklin will be cut down by developers. After many years of discussion on the hot topic, the 300-500 year old trees are finally coming down for the sake of profit. It is certainly disappointing that our community leaders are encouraging the removal of these trees; they are giving up a part of our environment for the sake of development and commerce. Northeast Tennessee is certainly known for its beautiful surroundings, but do our elected officials want to continue that reputation? With the removal of these extremely historic trees, one would certainly not sense the ecological-friendliness of our leaders. We need to tell the people that represent us that we care about our surroundings and that we want to preserve our historical and environmental heritage! Myself, I would much rather see those trees sitting on an empty lot than not seeing them at all and with a concrete parking lot in their place!

  1. Its sad about the trees coming down but their main reason for doing this is that they want to create more jobs in Johnson City because their sick of watching people graduate from ETSU then move to a bigger city to get a job.

  2. Well, I could see them wanting to create more jobs for ETSU graduates, but I really doubt that condos are really going create high-quality jobs for college graduates. This place might require a few administration people, but the major workforce of condos usually only require employees to graduate from high school (if that).

  3. The trees are gone! I passed by today (Sunday 11/20/05) and they were cutting them up. It's sad to see such beautiful trees replaced with concrete.
